There are many different kinds of people and people tend to evolve their personal values across the life course.
For the young person the values that are important to them ( and so what they seek in others) are positive body image, hedonism, exciting and thrilling pursuits, ostentatious materialism fuelled by the competitive instinct and the need to impress others.They crave the emotional security of being accepted by other members of their social group.So, how they look and what they do, constantly referencing friends, magazines and other media, depends ultimately on the shifting values of fashion and the changing face of youth culture.
The wiser and more mature person learns that such things, although bringing feelings of fulfilment and happiness in the short term, are not as important as the humanitarian values of unconditional positive regard for others, emotional sincerity, supporting, loyal companionship and the warmth and closeness that comes with caring from the heart.Such things help to build a strong, long term relationship between two people where love is founded on 'give' as well as 'take'.
