The passenger can help out the driver with harmony and opening drinks. Night driving with books on tape, finding roadside attractions. Laying on the hood of the car side by side, warm from the engine, wishing on shooting stars. Choosing hotels based on town name absurditiy. Room service and staying an extra day because we were too busy the first night to sleep.
